Foundation Relations and Corporate Philanthropy

We support the efforts of our administrators, faculty, and development directors. We offer a range of services to help you successfully identify and secure funding from foundations and corporations interested in supporting the university's mission and priorities.

Meet the Team

Sylvia Bierhuis Sylvia Bierhuis, Executive Director

Sylvia leads the FRCP team, leveraging her 10+ years of Corporate and Foundation fundraising experience at Berkeley. She works extensively with leadership to develop impactful fundraising strategies and manages relationships with key campus units. 

Sylvia has a B.A. in English from the University of Georgia and a MPA from Cal State East Bay. 

Sylvia serves as a liaison to the following campus units:

David Siegfried David M. Siegfried, Director

David focuses on interdisciplinary proposals related to education, equity, and social justice. He is a proud graduate of Bard College.

David serves as liaison to the following campus units:

Aaron Diaz Aaron Diaz, Director

Aaron maintains a portfolio of STEM-focused foundations and serves as liaison to the following colleges, schools, divisions and departments:

Margaret Guerrero Margaret Guerrero, Director

Margaret manages a portfolio of foundations that supports initiatives in public policy, urban and regional issues, international development, and the arts and humanities. Margaret has a B.S. in Communication Studies and a MPA from the University of Texas at Austin.

Margaret serves as liaison to the following campus units:

Nell Payne Nell Payne,  Associate Director of Operations 

Nell oversees the work of the FRCP operations team. She monitors all database things CADS (bio, contact reports, solicitations) and works to ensure all gifts and grants are solicited, allocated and stewarded properlyNell also works to ensure organization record integrity.

Jillian Parlee Jillian Parlee, Assistant Director, Communications 

Jillian is the mastermind behind FRCP's bimonthly digest of upcoming funding opportunities. She also manages FRCP’s web presence and training opportunities, monitors RFPs for alignment with campus projects and programs, and assists with annual reporting and database maintenance.

Susie Ward Susie Ward, Assistant Director, Prospect Research

Susie spearheads FRCP’s prospect research efforts for organizations, working closely with campus partners to identify and explore new funding opportunities and manage fundraiser portfolios.

University Development and Alumni Relations (UDAR)

The FRCP team is a division of University Development and Alumni Relations (UDAR); which increases support for and enhances knowledge of UC Berkeley through communications, public outreach, and fundraising. The department is responsible for centralized fundraising and donor engagement, and works to strengthen unit development offices by consulting and partnering with campus fundraisers. University Development and Alumni Relations also handles a range of central activities and services encompassing events, communications, stewardship, prospect development, gift management, database management, and more.

UC Berkeley Foundation (UCBF)

University Development and Alumni Relations encompasses the UC Berkeley Foundation (UCBF), a California nonprofit public benefit corporation established to secure support for the University. The UCBF is also Cal's primary vehicle for enlisting fundraising volunteers from the private sector. The UCBF is staffed by University Development and Alumni Relations leadership.
