The Foundation supports research and innovative programs that engage the public, in an effort to open minds, deepen understanding, and inspire curiosity. They invest in bold ideas from contrarian thinkers — ideas that cross disciplinary boundaries and challenge conventional assumptions.

Priority areas of funding include: 
Philosophy & Theology; Life Sciences; Public Engagement; Character Virtue Development; Individual Freedom & Free Markets; Human Sciences; Mathematical & Physical Sciences; and Culture & Global Perspectives.

Funding Opportunities

The foundation aims to raise awareness of immigrant contributions to the United States and foster appreciation of the arts and sciences. To that end, the foundation aims to support emerging to mid-career immigrant professionals in the biomedical sciences and the arts who have demonstrated outstanding achievements early in their careers. Priority funding areas for 2024 include: biomedical science and design.
  • Award Amount: $50K (6 awards total)
  • Deadline: Applications are due June 12, 2023
The YSP program supports scholarship for early-career researchers. The program funds implementation research that is policy- and practice-relevant, and that examines the preparation, competency, compensation, well-being, and ongoing professional learning of the early care and education (ECE) workforce.
  • Award Amount: $180K - $225K
  • Deadline: Applications are due June 13, 2023

This program supports multi-disciplinary teams of PIs with expertise in both human and animal research to perform coordinated cross-species studies to advance our understanding of ASD-relevant behaviors and their underlying neurobiological mechanisms, with the potential for developing novel biomarkers or interventions.
  • Award Amount: $400K (over 2 - 3 years)
  • Deadline: Applications are due June 15, 2023
The Holberg Prize is an international prize awarded annually for outstanding contributions to research in the humanities, social sciences, law and theology.  The prize is awarded annually to a scholar who has made outstanding contributions to research in the humanities, social sciences, law or theology. The Prize may be awarded both for work within a particular academic discipline and for work of a cross-disciplinary nature. The recipient must have had a decisive influence on international research.
  • Prize Amount: NOK 6,000,000 (~ $650K USD)
  • Deadline: Applications are due June 15, 2023

The early career fellowship is rooted in the revolutionary power of relationships and networks, because the way we work must mirror the world we want to create. The fellowship is focused on making the U.S. a more equitable and just place for all, with a focus on five key issue areas – Civil Rights, Immigration & Refugee Rights, LGBTQIA and Women’s Rights, Environmental Protection, and Health & Wellness. 
  • Award Amount: $50K
  • Deadline: Applications are due June 16, 2023  
The Collaborative Pairs Pilot Project Awards were developed as a funding mechanism to catalyze new collaborations and scientific partnerships and springboard early-stage projects that are bold, creative and “out-of-the-box.” The Collaborative Pairs mechanism focuses specifically on pairs of investigators.
  • Award Amount: $200K (over 18 months)
  • Deadline: Letters of Intent (LOIs) are due June 22, 2023

The foundation seeks proposals on the priority focus area of Economic Mobility. The June round will focus on needs of community; including affordable housing, neighborhood revitalization and small business resiliency.
  • Award Amount: Up to $50K
  • Deadline: Applications are due June 23, 2023
The goal of the program is to bring award recipients and CooperVision scientists together to explore new areas of technology advancement. Proposals should demonstrate significant potential for research discoveries within CooperVision key focus areas for 2023. Focus areas for 2023 include: Understanding Childhood Myopia Development; Technologies to Prevent Myopia Onset; Strategies to prevent development of symptomatology in new contact lens wearers; and the Impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on Contact Lens Fitting and Diagnostics.
  • Award Amount: Up to $100K for the Seedling Award (over 1 year); Up to $400K for the Translational Research Award (over 2 years)
  • Deadline: Proposals are due June 23, 2023
The foundation awards grants in the categories of Education, Policy and Communication & Public Opinion. For 2023, priority funding will be in the area of Disruption and Resilience. Thematic grants will continue to present opportunities to address issues of mutual consequence to American and Japanese societies. 
  • Award Amount: Up to $125K 
  • Deadline: Applications are due June 30, 2023
This early career faculty award helps to develop outstanding teacher scholars who are recognized by their scientific communities for the quality and innovation of their research programs and their academic leadership skills. Eligible applicants are tenure-track faculty who hold primary or courtesy appointments in chemistry, physics, or astronomy departments.
  • Award Amount: $100K (over 3 years)
  • Deadline: Applications are due July 1, 2023
This career development program supports promising early-career researchers with interests in reducing inequality or understanding the use of research evidence.
  • Award Amount: $350K (over 5 years)
  • Deadline: Applications are due July 6, 2023
  • Interested applicants are encouraged to work with David Siegfried.
This career development program supports promising early-career researchers with interests in reducing inequality or understanding the use of research evidence.
  • Award Amount: Unrestricted (over 4 years)
  • Deadline: Letters of intent are due July 11, 2023
The program seeks research on whether rising economic inequality has affected social, political, and economic institutions, and the extent to which increased inequality has affected equality of opportunity, social mobility, and the intergenerational transmission of advantage. They seek investigator-initiated research projects that will broaden our understanding of the causes and consequences of rising economic inequalities in the United States. 
  • Award Amount: Up to $200K
  • Deadline: Applications due July 11, 2023

The program supports innovative research on the causes and consequences of changes in the quality of jobs for less and moderately-skilled workers and their families. They seek investigator-initiated research proposals that will broaden understanding of the role of changes in employer practices, the nature of the labor market and public policies on the employment, earnings, and the quality of jobs of workers. 
  • Award Amount: Up to $200K
  • Deadline: Applications due July 11, 2023

The program encourages perspectives from multiple disciplines, including economics, psychology, political science, sociology, law, public policy, and other social sciences, to further our understanding of economic, social, political, and psychological decision-making processes, attitudes, behaviors, and institutional practices in public and private contexts such as policing/criminal legal systems, employment, housing, politics, racial/ethnic relations, and immigration.
  • Award Amount: Up to $200K
  • Deadline: Applications due July 11, 2023

The program seeks investigator-initiated research proposals on the social, economic, and political effects of the changing racial and ethnic composition of the U.S. population, including the transformation of communities and ideas about what it means to be American. They are especially interested in innovative research that examines the roles of race, ethnicity, nativity, and legal status in outcomes for immigrants, U.S.-born racial and ethnic minorities, and native-born whites. 
  • Award Amount: Up to $200K

The program seeks to support innovative research on the effects of race, citizenship, legal status and politics, political culture and public policy on outcomes for immigrants and for the native-born of different racial and ethnic groups and generations.

The program provides support for collaborative exploratory work that opens new ground for comprehensively assessing or mitigating the impacts of climate change on human health. This program will support both individual scientists and multi-investigator teams. Early career faculty and postdoctoral fellows nearing their transition to independence are encouraged to apply.
  • Award Amount: $375K (over 3 years)
