Funding Opportunities

OpenAI, Inc., is launching a program to award ten grants to fund experiments in setting up a democratic process for deciding what rules AI systems should follow, within the bounds defined by the law.
  • Award Amount: 10 grants of $100K will be awarded
  • Deadline: Applications are due June 24, 2023
  • Interested applicants are strongly encouraged to partner with Margaret Guerrero
The 2023-24 funding cycle of the investigator-initiated research grant program supports innovative investigator-initiated research with a high potential to inform improvements to the United States healthcare system. Projects must advance the knowledge base in healthcare financing, delivery, management, and/or policy. 
  • Award Amount: Up to $500K
  • Deadline: Applications are due June 30, 2023
The foundation awards grants in the categories of Education, Policy and Communication & Public Opinion. For 2023, priority funding will be in the area of Disruption and Resilience. Thematic grants will continue to present opportunities to address issues of mutual consequence to American and Japanese societies. 
  • Award Amount: Up to $125K 
  • Deadline: Applications are due June 30, 2023
This early career faculty award helps to develop outstanding teacher scholars who are recognized by their scientific communities for the quality and innovation of their research programs and their academic leadership skills. Eligible applicants are tenure-track faculty who hold primary or courtesy appointments in chemistry, physics, or astronomy departments.
  • Award Amount: $100K (over 3 years)
  • Deadline: Applications are due July 1, 2023
This career development program supports promising early-career researchers with interests in reducing inequality or understanding the use of research evidence.
  • Award Amount: $350K (over 5 years)
  • Deadline: Applications are due July 6, 2023

This grant program will advance the field of deep tissue imaging, which aims to obtain cellular resolution in complex tissue and through skin and bone. The long-term goal of this opportunity is to drive technology development aimed at visualizing cellular structure and function throughout the body.This funding opportunity is explicitly aimed at technology development. 
  • Award Amount: No amount limitations (over 4 years)
  • Deadline: Letters of intent are due July 11, 2023
The program seeks research on whether rising economic inequality has affected social, political, and economic institutions, and the extent to which increased inequality has affected equality of opportunity, social mobility, and the intergenerational transmission of advantage. They seek investigator-initiated research projects that will broaden our understanding of the causes and consequences of rising economic inequalities in the United States. 
  • Award Amount: Up to $200K
  • Deadline: Applications due July 11, 2023

The program supports innovative research on the causes and consequences of changes in the quality of jobs for less and moderately-skilled workers and their families. They seek investigator-initiated research proposals that will broaden understanding of the role of changes in employer practices, the nature of the labor market and public policies on the employment, earnings, and the quality of jobs of workers. 
  • Award Amount: Up to $200K
  • Deadline: Applications due July 11, 2023

The program encourages perspectives from multiple disciplines, including economics, psychology, political science, sociology, law, public policy, and other social sciences, to further our understanding of economic, social, political, and psychological decision-making processes, attitudes, behaviors, and institutional practices in public and private contexts such as policing/criminal legal systems, employment, housing, politics, racial/ethnic relations, and immigration.
  • Award Amount: Up to $200K
  • Deadline: Applications due July 11, 2023

The program seeks investigator-initiated research proposals on the social, economic, and political effects of the changing racial and ethnic composition of the U.S. population, including the transformation of communities and ideas about what it means to be American. They are especially interested in innovative research that examines the roles of race, ethnicity, nativity, and legal status in outcomes for immigrants, U.S.-born racial and ethnic minorities, and native-born whites. 
  • Award Amount: Up to $200K
  • Deadline: Applications due July 11, 2023

The program seeks to support innovative research on the effects of race, citizenship, legal status and politics, political culture and public policy on outcomes for immigrants and for the native-born of different racial and ethnic groups and generations.
  • Award Amount: Up to $200K
  • Deadline: Applications due July 11, 2023

The foundation exclusively funds research related to human origins. Priority of funding is commonly given to exploratory phases of promising new research projects that meet the stated purpose of the Foundation. 
  • Award Amount: Up to $20K for PhD candidates; Up to $30K to senior scientists and post-doctoral researchers
  • Deadline: Applications due July 15, 2023
CZI seeks to support one-year projects in the field of cryo-correlative light and electron microscopy (cryo-CLEM) labels. This request for applications will accelerate the development of imaging probes that can leverage and combine the strengths of 1) light microscopy to study cell function and 2) cryo-electron tomography to study sub-cellular structure. 
  • Award Amount: Up to $165K
  • Deadline: Applications due July 20, 2023
The Foundation supports research and innovative programs that engage the public, in an effort to open minds, deepen understanding, and inspire curiosity. They invest in bold ideas from contrarian thinkers — ideas that cross disciplinary boundaries and challenge conventional assumptions.

Priority areas of funding include: 
Philosophy & Theology; Life Sciences; Public Engagement; Character Virtue Development; Individual Freedom & Free Markets; Human Sciences; Mathematical & Physical Sciences; and Culture & Global Perspectives.
  • Award Amount: Unrestricted (up 3 years)
  • Deadline: Applications are due August 18, 2023
  • Interested applicants are strongly encouraged to work with David Siegfried
The program provides support for collaborative exploratory work that opens new ground for comprehensively assessing or mitigating the impacts of climate change on human health. This program will support both individual scientists and multi-investigator teams. Early career faculty and postdoctoral fellows nearing their transition to independence are encouraged to apply.
  • Award Amount: $375K (over 3 years)
  • Deadline: Applications are due August 23, 2023

The program funds research and educational projects that empower underserved Americans with the knowledge, skills and tools to make sound financial decisions throughout life. Applications that use data to advance understanding of the relationships among financial literacy, financial capability and financial well-being will be prioritized.  
Award Amount: $50K - $100K
The program supports global research collaborations that advance understanding of the Internet and its value for all. This program is intended for research that is applied and open, meaning the research seeks to answer a real-world question and should be openly published and made available to the scientific community at no cost. Focus areas include: Greening the Internet, Internet Economy, a Trustworthy Internet, and Decolonizing the Internet.
Award Amount: $200K
The program aims to create a more equitable and humane justice system. Current funding approaches are focused on sentencing reform and community reinvestment.
Award Amount: $25K - $300K
The program seeks proposals that are primed to influence health equity in the future. Priority areas of focus include: Future of Evidence; Future of Social Interaction; Future of Food; Future of Work. Additionally, they welcome ideas that offer unique approaches to advancing health equity and our progress toward a Culture of Health.
Award Amount: Average grant is $315K (over 1 to 3 years)
The SEED initiative is a new program that provides supplements to existing grants for the recruitment of new lab members from American underrepresented minority groups at the postdoctoral level. The goal of this award is to increase diversity and fight inequity. 
Award Amount: Up to $100K per year (for up to 3 years)
The program goal is to foster research and education on public policy issues that affect individual freedom and economic liberty. The foundation seeks to develop solutions to the country’s most important and challenging domestic policy issues including: tax and budget policy; cost-benefit analysis; the legal system; the environment; social welfare, etc. 
Award Amount: $25K - $300K
